What Is Hormone Therapy?

Hormone therapy involves using bioidentical hormones–molecularly identical to the ones your body makes on its own–to restore optimal levels in your body. a. Hormone Therapy

i. Individualized compounded bHRT – We have been using the same reliable compounding pharmacies for 15 years and have found compounded hormones get the best results for our patients. Based on lab results (including DUTCH test), symptoms, and goals, a unique formula is prescribed for each patient.
ii. Formulation options – Typically we use topical estrogen, testosterone, and DHEA (often combined into a single topical cream), and oral progesterone. We can also use injectable testosterone, and progesterone cream instead where appropriate.

b. Comprehensive Nutritional Testing, Stool Testing, and Food Sensitivity Testing

i. We order these tests in a way that is covered by most insurance plans. These results give us the data to be able to recommend the exact nutrients/supplements that you need (and avoid the ones you don’t need!). Many vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients act as cofactors for metabolism of hormones, neurotransmitters, and macronutrients, and optimizing those helps to get the most benefit out of any hormone optimization therapy plan as well.

Ongoing Support

One of the many benefits of our membership structure is that we monitor your progress closely, following up and adjusting your treatment as needed to ensure you experience sustainable improvements.

Hormone Therapy FAQs

How long does it take to see results from hormone therapy?

Many patients start noticing improvements in energy and mood within a couple of  weeks (often less for certain symptoms), though it can take several months for hormone levels to fully balance and for all symptoms to improve.

Are bioidentical hormones safer than synthetic ones?

Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as those produced by your body, which may lead to fewer side effects. Each patient’s situation is unique, and we’ll help determine the best, safest option for you. Using bioidentical hormone compounds also enables us to individualize each patient’s dose, without being constrained by the dose increments that are available at the traditional pharmacies.

Do I need ongoing hormone therapy forever?

Not necessarily. Our goal is to restore optimal balance and then maintain those levels with diet, lifestyle changes, and other supportive therapies. The duration depends on individual factors, including the underlying cause of the imbalance. Once in menopause, the ovaries will not suddenly start to produce hormones again, however, so it is reasonable (and beneficial and healthy in most cases) to continue on the hormone therapy longer-term.

Where can I take a deeper dive and learn more about the research if I’m not sure about hormones?

One book I recommend to nearly all of my female patients is Estrogen Matters by Dr. Avrum Bluming. Another great resource is Testosterone for Life by Dr. Abraham Morgentaler.
