How I Treat Hormone Deficiencies
Introduction to Hormones
Hello, everyone; I’m Joya Van Der Laan, a family nurse practitioner and owner of Nourish House Calls. Today, I’d like to introduce the topic of hormones.
Common Patient Concerns
In my free 15-minute discovery calls with prospective patients, I often predict their concerns. Many report weight gain despite consistent eating and exercise habits, difficulty building muscle, increased fat, altered moods, irritability, poor sleep, brain fog, and low energy.
My Approach to Treatment
These repetitive stories excite me because it indicates patients have not found help elsewhere and are seeking solutions. I am confident in my ability to improve their well-being. My approach includes using the Dutch test, a comprehensive dried urine test for hormones, particularly beneficial for women.
The Dutch Test and Its Benefits
While men’s hormones can be effectively tested with blood, the Dutch test offers a more nuanced analysis, assessing levels of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, adrenals, melatonin, and some B vitamins. It also reveals how these hormones are metabolized, identifying low-risk or higher-risk pathways for intervention.
Hormone Replacement Strategies
If hormone levels are imbalanced, suboptimal, or low, I replace them with bioidentical hormones such as estrogen, DHEA, and progesterone, and even testosterone, which is also crucial for women. These are typically administered as topical creams, except for progesterone, which is usually in pill form.
A Holistic Approach
However, treatment isn’t limited to hormone levels alone. The body’s complexity demands a broader approach, encompassing adrenal health, thyroid function, liver and kidney health, inflammation levels, diet, and sleep, all contributing significantly to overall well-being.
